Friends of Windward Wounded Warriors Honored

Program Manager - Chaplain Steve Jensen (US Navy, Retired)

Friends of Windward Wounded Warriors was created to support all wounded, ill and injured Marines and their families at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i, as well as those medically evacuated from Okinawa and Japan for treatment in Hawaii.

Dedicated volunteers work together to provide a comprehensive response to the needs of recovering service members, spouses and children. While they recover from surgery, rehab, mental health treatment and more, we help by providing emergency assistance, family day events, special military activities, retreats, and dinners.

We respond quickly to emergencies, like an aircraft crash that left two dead and twenty injured.  Our network immediately assisted with clothing, toiletries, bedding, cell phones, food and drink for the survivors who literally lost everything.  Their families who came from all over the US were assisted until the military was able to provide for their needs.

The entire family is affected when dealing with health challenges. We help the children understand that changes they see in their parents are not their fault. Being with other families experiencing similar circumstances builds special bonds and allows for sharing that helps to heal.

Some events have included retreats for caregivers, marriage enrichment, transition and PTSD counseling and all have proven to be both healing and encouraging. An annual Wounded Warrior reunion in Park City, UT takes advantage of the National Ability Center and Olympic Park. Outdoor activity challenges for those struggling with transition to civilian life and overcoming obstacles have proven beneficial.

The Honolulu Navy League volunteered at the Honolulu Country Club Foundation Charity Golf Tournament in support of the Friends of Windward Wounded Warriors, who was one of the recipients of the Benefit Tournament. The Honolulu Navy League is the sponsor for the “Friends of Windward Wounded Warriors” and congratulates “Chaps” for his good work.
