Hilton Hawaiian Village - Coral Ballroom IV and V
The Navy League of the United States, Honolulu Council, will hold its 16th Annual American Patriot Awards Dinner on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. This year, the Council’s honorees are two very special American patriots, Admiral Ronald Zlatoper, USN (Ret), and Mr. Henry Kapono.
ADM Ronald “Zap” Zlatoper is a career U.S. Navy pilot with 33 years in the Navy and a community leader. He was one of very few who flew missions in both the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. He was the Commanding Officer of VA-85, the Commander of Carrier Air Wing 1 and Carrier Air Wing 15, the Seventh Fleet Chief of Staff and Desert Storm Battle Group Commander of Carrier Group 7. ADM Zlatoper received numerous personal decorations including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V. Ashore, he was the F/A-18 Program Coordinator in OPNAV, an Executive Assistant on the Secretary of the Navy’s Staff and the Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense. As a Vice Admiral (3 star), he was the Deputy Chief of Operations for Personnel. Promoted to Admiral (4 star), he served as the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet. Retiring from the Navy in 1997, he was the Chairman and CEO of Sanchez Computer Associates, Inc. Zap is a Trustee of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, serves on three corporate boards, served as a Trustee for the Estate of James Campbell and is now active as a Governor for Chaminade University, on the Board of the University of Hawaii Engineering School, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, the Military Affairs Council, Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and Catholic Charities of Hawaii. He has served as the Dean of the Consular Corps of Hawaii and is currently the Honorary Consul for Slovenia.
A native Hawaiian and Grammy nominated, Henry Kapono, is a multipleaward-winning vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and composer. Henry is one of Hawaii’s most popular recording artists and presides over one of Hawaii's top multi-function entertainment companies, Kapono Inc. He is equally known for his community support and philanthropic endeavors, recently launching The Henry Kapono Foundation, whose mission is to "Support the community through music and the arts and by giving with aloha.” Touring with a local rock band in the late 60s, Henry ended up stranded by the band’s promoter in Vietnam. He and the band spent two years performing for the troops in Vietnam and Thailand before returning to Hawaii. The experience left him with a profound respect for the military, a lasting commitment to peace, a deep appreciation for life and compassion and aloha (love) for all people—themes that continue to resonate in his music. To this day, Henry takes every opportunity to celebrate those who serve and their families.
